Music Style
Christiania 12 of Oslo, Norway, is a 12-piece band dedicated
to playing the early big band material from the 1920's and-30's. Our
repertory consists of tunes from that era, originally recorded by jazz
greats like Luis Russell, Fletcher Henderson, Louis Armstrong, Don
Redman a.o. We have also included a handful of Norwegian original
compositions from the early 1940's.
Most of the arrangements in our books have been written by Roy Hellvin, a very respected conductor and pianist, who occasionally sits in with our band.
History
The band was formed in 1992, on the occasion of an award concert for the New Orleans Workshop, a jazz club that has been the home ground for traditional jazz in Oslo since 1972. The members of the 7-piece Christiania Jazz Band invited 5 more musicians to join in with that concert in mind, and afterwards we just agreed to keep going!
Our music is well suited for jazz festivals, jazz clubs, parties etc.
